This needs to be cut to the internal measurements of the frame. Your fabric needs to be about 5cm bigger on each side of the card. You can then cut it to size once you’ve got your frame. Place your embroidery onto the card. If you want to add relief, you can place cotton wool between the card and the fabric. Turn everything over. Fold the overhang of your embroidery design onto the card and glue it down.Pay particular attention to the corners. Cut the corners if you can’t fold over the fabric. You don’t want any irregularities once it’s all framed.  To make sure the fabric doesn’t come off, you can always glue bits of paper over the top. Again, make sure that they’re not covering the corners.Now you just have to put your embroidery in your frame and you’re done.Some people ma y want to make their frame from scratch. To do this, you’ll need pieces of wood and some good wood glue. You need to cut the wood to the size you want and cut diagonal joints at the edges. You can do this without glue but it’ll still take some time. Start by checking that the edges of your embroidery are uniform. The overhang needs to be the same on the left and the right and the top and the bottom. This will allow you to centre your embroidery. You can use thread to hold your embroidery in place. (Source: NicolePina)To avoid creases, iron your embroidery.  Once it’s flat, place your embroidery onto the card. The overhang will allow you to position your embroidery nicely in the centre of the frame.  To attach it without glue, you’re going to need to sew it down.With a needle and thread, start on one of the larger of the sides. Sew the two larger sides and then do the smaller sides.   This will give you a sort of grid.Make sure that you opt for a solid thread and pass two or three times if you need to. You don’t want to break a thread. Otherwise, your embroidery will hang.As you can guess this technique isn’t for beginners. However, if you get it right, it will hold your embroidery in place and you won’t have to worry about your embroidery coming loose, either.If you’re doing this for the first time, start with a small project. The bigger the embroidery, the harder it will be to keep in position as you attach it t o the card. Once you’ve got the technique sorted, you can move onto bigger projects.Should You Frame Embroidery with or without a Glass Pane?Whether or not you use a glass pane is down to each embroiderer. There are advantages and disadvantages to using one. Depending on the thread you use, you may want to think about whether or not you use a glass pane. The glass protects the embroidery from dirt and dust.  Some argue that the glass makes the whole thing look more “finished”. Of course, this is a matter of taste. After all, the decision is yours.With many different hand embroidery stitches (cross stitch, back stitch, crewel stitch, etc.), it can be difficult to get started. If you need help with embroidery stitches, needlework, and finding embroider y patterns, you might want to consider getting help from a private tutor. Perrine: Greek life does not play a big role in campus social life. When I attended, there were no housed sororities. Stanford encourages a different kind of social connectedness through academics and athletics. It is very easy to build great friendships in your dorms and beyond. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Perrine: The short answer is yes, to both. The Career Center is a great resource and especially at the graduate level, there are tons of companies looking to hire Stanford grads. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Perrine: The libraries are huge and there are many specialized libraries that give students the opportunity to access field specific materials. Stanfords resources are seemingly infinite and I never felt crowded or that there was a lack of space. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Perrine: I was very involved in community outreach programs in East Palo Alto and loved every minute of it. In terms of the community, Atherton and Palo Alto are very affluent and family oriented towns. But, San Francisco is only 20 minutes away and most students make the most of venturing into the city. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Perrine: Class sizes vary, but most large classes have small seminar groups that provide intensive academic support. The student body is not very large compared to UC schools which is why Stanford is very difficult to get accepted to. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Perrine: I loved working through StepOut, the community outreach program that I taught through. The kids we worked with had the opportunity to perform at Stanford in the spring and it was awesome. They were all at-risk kids and it was just great to see them so excited and say, I want to go to Stanford. That was part of a community outreach class I took and I taught for all four years. However, you don’t have to head all the way to China to enjoy Chinese food. This means that students should be focusing on actively producing the language rather than having a passive understanding of it.The listening part of the exam includes pre-recorded listening excerpts spoken by native speakers. The exam lasts between 35 and 40 minutes depending on whether they're entered in the Foundation or Higher tier.The reading exam lasts either 30 minutes (Foundation Tier) or 50 minutes (Higher Tier). Students' reading comprehension will be tested (without the use of a dictionary) by reading extracts from brochures, g uides, letters, newspapers, magazines, books, faxes, emails, and websites. Students are expected to be able to identify key points and, at the higher tier, recognise points of view, attitudes, and emotions in texts.Their speaking test includes two tasks and, unlike the other two parts we've seen, are not divided into foundation and higher tier. Students need to produce their own answers and will be tested on their communication, range and accuracy, pronunciation and intonation, and interaction and fluency.The fourth and final part of their exam is writing. This, like the speaking exam, is marked using a range of criteria. Of course, this does mean you'll have to put more work in than a student who's already passed their GCSE.More and more students are opting to take Chinese at A Level, too. In fact, in 2018, the number of students studying Chinese at A Level surpassed German for the first time ever!AS Level and A2 Level ChineseAt A Level, students are expected to improve their abilities in understanding Mandarin Chinese (or develop them if they've never studied it before). By this point, they should be able to confidently communicate in Mandarin and also start learning about Chinese-speaking society, history, and culture.Choosing to Study Chinese at Sixth Form or CollegeSince Chinese isn't the most common subject at A Level, it mightn't be offered at your school's sixth form and you may have to attend a college instead. Depending on your circumstances and your other A Level choices, you'll have to decide in some cases whether or not i t's worthwhile attending a sixth form or college that's worse than your first choice just because it offers Chinese at A Level.Of course, if you're absolutely set on studying Mandarin Chinese at university or working with the language, then this choice won't matter. However, if you're not sure, you should think very carefully about your A Level choices before choosing not to attend a good sixth form or college just because they don't offer Chinese. As you'll see, you don't necessarily need to study a language at A Level in order to learn it!International ClassesWhen it comes to language learning and the Chinese language, spending time in China is arguably the best way to learn Mandarin Chinese.By attending a class with a Chinese teacher in China, you'll soon be conversational in the language. Using your new language every day will ensure that you regularly practise your comprehension and production of the language. Additionally, these give you an opportunity to travel to places like Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou, for example. However, keep in mind that in a lot of these places, other Chinese languages, such as Cantonese (in Hong Kong and Guangzhou) and the Hu dialect of Wu Chinese (in Shanghai) are also spoken.Learning Chinese Outside of SchoolWhile a lot of Chinese learning takes place in schools, there's nothing stopping you from learning a language outside of compulsory education or a university. In fact, you can learn Chinese online thanks to great resources like YouTube channels, blogs, and websites.Additionally, you can attend Chinese conversation classes, practise with another beginner, or do an online Chinese language exchange where you chat in Chinese with a native speaker for half of the time and then help them with their English for the other half.If those options aren't for you, you can also enlist the help of a private Chinese tutor to help you.
